Laws of attraction had a way of putting things out of reach. Just when Minka thought there might be something between her and Solomon, she was reminded yet again of the gulf that divided them.

It didn’t matter how attracted she was to him because there was something that kept him from showing her the same. That meant it was in her best interest to leave things alone and forget about Solomon LaRue once and for all.

If only it were that easy.

She shook her head and set about washing the pans she’d dirtied while making the cupcakes. While wiping the island and counters clean, she heard the shower cut off.

Minka turned to dump the crumbs into the sink when everything faded. There was never any warning when the visions occurred, but more troubling was the fact that she was having another so soon after the previous one.

She tried to grab hold of something, anything as she felt herself falling, but her body wouldn’t listen. As the world around her wilted away to be replaced with another, the first thing she heard was the laughter.

There was no reason for her to look for the source. It was a voice she recognized. Delphine. That maniacal laughter sent chills of dread down her spine.

“It’s all your fault, Minka.”

Delphine’s voice was all around her. Minka turned to discover she was in the middle of the street outside of Gator Bait. There were so many dead bodies—humans, djinn, vampires, witches, and werewolves—that she had to pick and choose where she stepped.

Yet there was no sign of Delphine.

But the crazy bitch was there. Minka could feel her.

“Look at what you’ve done,” Delphine said. “Look!”

Minka gravitated toward the platinum fur of a werewolf. She knew it was Solomon, but the sight of his snowy fur tinged with red made her turn her head away.

“What do you want?” Minka shouted into the air, her head turning this way and that searching for Delphine.

Movement out of the corner of her eye had her spinning around. The sight of Delphine covered in blood made Minka take a step back.

Delphine continued toward her, walking on the bodies as if they were steppingstones. She didn’t stop until she stood before Minka. “You want to know what I want? It’s you, witch. You’re what I want.”

“Why?”

“You can save the innocents. You can even save your friends,” Delphine continued, her arm sweeping from left to right to encompass everyone.

Minka glanced down at Solomon’s dead body. “What do I need to do?”

“Surrender to me.”

“And if I don’t?”

“What you see here is just the beginning if you fight me.”

Minka swallowed hard. “This isn’t a vision, is it?”

“Sort of.” Delphine smiled. “You’ve had this vision before. I thought it fitting to use for me to talk to you.”

“You could’ve called.”

Delphine chuckled. “Oh, I do like your spirit, Minka. But you and I both know this is the only way.”

Minka knew the priestess was powerful, but she hadn’t realized Delphine was able to enter someone’s visions. That was...troubling.

“You have twenty-four hours to come to me.
